John Rose
Hospice Chair
Nuheat Industries Limited

John Rose is President and CEO of Nuheat, the manufacturer of North America’s leading electric radiant floor heating system.  Starting at Nuheat as a Board Member in 1991, John assumed his role as President in 1997 later becoming CEO. Since that time, John has led Nuheat to be the industry forerunner, making heated floors one of the most popular amenities in new home construction and renovation. He is also responsible for fostering a strong employee-led charitable giving movement that has yielded substantial contributions for various community organizations.

Prior to joining Nuheat, John served as Vice President of Kirkland & Rose, a British Columbia based importer and distributor of food products.  John has volunteered with various organizations including serving as Director of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Director and President of the BC Food Brokers Association and as a member of the Board of St. Christopher Church.

Born and raised in Vancouver, John currently resides in West Vancouver with his wife and is the father to adult twin boys and a teenage daughter. John holds a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Denver.

Mark Bacon
Family Representative
Creation Technologies

Mark Bacon has been involved with Canuck Place since 2002 when his youngest son was diagnosed with a life threatening illness.  His family has benefited from many of the services offered by Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, including palliative care, end of life care and family grief support.  He is also a member of the Canuck Place Family Advisory Council.

Mark resides in Vancouver with his wife and two sons.  He is an Electrical Engineer with 15 years of experience in the electronic industry.  He currently works for Creation Technologies as a Customer Focused Team Leader.

R. Thomas Burley
Oakcrest Park Estates Ltd.

Tom Burley is a chartered accountant who spent 26 years working in public practice in Victoria and Calgary. In 2006, he retired as a partner in the Victoria office of Grant Thornton LLP to take a position as CEO of Oakcrest Park Estates Ltd., a Victoria based real estate investment and development company.

Throughout his career, he has been very involved with a number of non-profit organizations. In 2005 her was recognized for over 20 years of volunteer service with Ducks Unlimited Canada and in 2006 he was the recipient of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC Community Service Award. He is currently a Director and past Chair of the Victoria Foundation and is President of the Union Club of British Columbia.

Paul Challinor
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP

Paul Challinor was raised in the U.K. and obtained his bachelors degree in Industrial Economics from Nottingham University in 1983. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1985. He spent two years with PwC Sydney from 1989 to 1991, transferred to PwC’s Vancouver office in 1994 and was admitted to partnership in 1997. Paul provides audit and advisory services to many of BC’s financial services companies and leads PwC's financial services practice in BC.

Paul is married to Ellen and is a proud father of two daughters, Jennifer and Kelly. He enjoys boating around the Gulf Islands and San Juan Islands, competitive badminton and skiing.

Neil Cusati
Telecommunications Executive

Most recently, Neil was the Vice President, Strategic Solutions for TELUS responsible for leading the development and implementation of various strategic sales and marketing initiatives within British Columbia. Neil’s career at TELUS included several senior leadership roles within the company in general management, sales, distribution and business development.

Neil is a graduate of the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, and of the Leadership Vancouver program. He has recently served on the Board of Directors of the TELUS Vancouver Community Board, and the BC 2009 World Police & Fire Games. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Leadership Vancouver and Creation Technologies, and has worked as a committee member with the Mel Jr. and Marty Zajac Foundation.

Neil is married with one son and lives in Burnaby.

Laura Edwards
York House School

Laura Edwards is Executive Director Advancement, responsible for fund raising at York House School in Vancouver.  York House is a 77 year old, independent, JK-12 all girls day school. During Ms Edwards’s tenure, the culture of giving at York House has grown significantly to include a thriving annual fund, capital campaign for new facilities, in addition to new scholarships for young women through the York House School Foundation.  Ms Edwards has an extensive background in business and volunteer work.  She has been Marketing Director for a 5-Star Hotel chain.  She ran her own investment and insurance business and received numerous awards and recognition for her achievements.

Ms Edwards volunteers her time including work with young people coaching Destination ImagiNation, an international competitive, creative problem solving program, helping teams achieve success at the global level.  Ms. Edwards has been a member of the Board of Directors of CARE Canada based in Ottawa for the past 11 years serving on the Executive Committee and chairing the Marketing Committee, in addition to field visits to Africa and India.  Ms Edwards also currently sits on the Westcoast Women’s’ Health Foundation, and Vancouver Whistler Games Network ‘More Than Gold’ boards.  For her work in the volunteer segment, Ms Edwards was awarded a Queen’s Jubilee medal in 2004.  In 2008 York House School created a 'Dream to Reality Award’ in recognition of Ms Edwards lifetime achievement ‘For making history in the world of independent schools in Canada by attracting the largest number of donors to a single campaign’.

Ms Edwards holds a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive), created the 'Giving Hearts' awards program for philanthropy in BC launched in the Fall ‘07,as a member of the Vancouver Chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals Board, and holds the Professional Development portfolio for western Canada on the Board of Canadian Association of Independent School Advancement Professionals. Ms Edwards is married with 2 teen-aged daughters.

Patricia Evans
Patricia Evans & Associates Inc.

In May, 2005, Patricia Evans joined the Board of Directors of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. She is a past director and former executive of many boards and volunteer organizations ranging from SPARC (the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia), Information Services Vancouver, the West Coast Women's Network, to the Health Care Public Relations Association (Canada).

Patricia Evans is a facilitator and consultant with more than 30 years experience in the health care and communications industries. She is the former Vice President & Senior Advisor to the President of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research where, as one of the founding staff team, she designed and implemented new programs and initiatives to further the non-profit agency’s leadership in building BC’s capacity for health research. She has also served in various roles at the Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia (C&W), including Director of Public Affairs & Communications. Patricia has won several local and regional awards for excellence in communication and writing and is a published author.

She holds a BA (Applied Sciences) and a Certificate in Liberal Arts from Simon Fraser University, and an MCE (Master of Continuing Education, Workplace Learning) from the University of Calgary. Patricia is also a graduate of the Foundation Program in Management for Women (Simon Fraser University), and a past participant in the Governor General’s Canadian Study Conference and Leadership Vancouver programs.

Gord Huston
Envision Financial

Gord Huston is the President and CEO of Envision Financial, one of Canada's largest credit unions, with $3.8 billion in assets under administration, approximately 120,000 member-owners, and nearly 825 employees.

Gord is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. He has more than 35 years of experience in the Canadian financial services industry, holding various leadership positions throughout the Ontario and British Columbia marketplace. As Chief Executive Officer of First Heritage Savings Credit Union, he led the organization through a successful merger with Delta Credit Union in 2001 to become President and CEO of Envision Financial.

Gord’s passion for teamwork and unwavering focus on member-owner needs, coupled with his vision for the organization and strong business acumen, have led Envision to become one of the 50 Best Employers in Canada for the past six years.

Gord is a member of the Board of the BCIT Foundation and Abbotsford Community Foundation. He and his wife, Enrica, are residents of Abbotsford and are very active in their local community.

Helen Low
Fasken Martineau DuMoulin

Helen Low is a lawyer with Fasken Martineau DuMoulin practicing primarily in the areas of will, estates and trusts litigation and health law. She is also an adjunct professor at the UBC Faculty of Law.

She has served as a member of the Succession Law Reform Project which has reviewed and recommended changes for legislation in BC and has authored many publications in her practice area. She has also served on the Boards of Children’s and Women’s Hospital and the Child & Family Research Institute of BC Children’s Hospital. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the People’s Law School.

Dr. John Newell Sr.
Windset Farms

Dr. John Newell - M.B.chB. F.R.C.S.(Ed.) F.R.C.S.(C) - is a retired general surgeon, now chairman of Windset Farms, which is one of the largest producers and marketers of greenhouse vegetables in North America. Windset Farms is a family affair - originally started by his wife Sylvia and now includes their sons, John Jr. and Steven as co-owners.

The support of Canuck Place is a Newell family affair.  John is not only giving his time, but has arranged fresh produce to be delivered to the Hospice’s kitchen on a weekly basis, straight from his family’s farm. His daughter Claire is also a supporter of Canuck place through her company Travel Best Bets Ltd..

John and Sylvia reside in Abbotsford, BC where they have lived for over 30 years.

Jim Rogers
Foundation Society Board Chair

Rogers Group Financial

Jim is a 41-year veteran of the financial services industry, and is the founder of Rogers Group Financial. He is a past two term Chair of the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CAIFA), now known as Advocis.

Jim’s community involvements have been extensive, including service on the Senate of UBC, the Boards of St. Paul’s Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital Foundation, Vancouver College, St. Mark’s College, the UBC Alumni Association, United Way, and the Vancouver Foundation.

In addition to Canuck Place Children's Hospice, Jim sits on the Boards of, or is an advisor to, The Financial Planners Standards Council of Canada and Rogers Group Financial.

Patti Schom-Moffatt
Karyo Communications

Patti Schom-Moffatt is founder of and senior partner at Karyo Communications. Patti is a seasoned public relations and communications strategist and has worked with senior decision-makers in both the public and private sectors.

During more than 20 years in the business, she has worked with all levels of government — local, regional, provincial and federal. Her expertise includes strategic communications planning, public relations, media relations, issues management, event management, stakeholder communications, corporate communications, community relations and facilitation. She has led or is leading Karyo’s team on projects for: Vancouver Coastal Health; BC Housing; the BC Association of Optometrists; the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS; the BC Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat; the Vancouver Regional Construction Association; Team Yes 2010 (in support of the Yes side in the City of Vancouver Olympics referendum); Partnerships British Columbia; Kitimat LNG Terminal (a proposed $500 million terminal and regasification facility); Tourism Vancouver; the Privy Council of Canada; the Lions Gate Bridge Completion Project; the Resort Municipality of Whistler (Whistler. It’s Our Future); the Columbia River Downstream Benefits Negotiating Committee; and dozens more.

Patti holds a Masters of Social Work, Social Policy degree from Carleton University in Ottawa and a BA from Waterloo University. She is a former nominee for Business in Vancouver's Influential Women in Business Award.

Katherine Whittred
Province of British Columbia (Retired)

Katherine Whittred recently retired as a provincial MLA. As a Member of the Provincial Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, she was first elected in 1996 to represent the riding of North Vancouver-Lonsdale and was re-elected in 2001 and again in 2005.

In her many years of public service, she has been and continues to be a strong advocate for seniors and social issues. Katherine was appointed Deputy Speaker November 6, 2007. Prior to this Katherine was Chair of the Government Caucus Committee on Social Development – one of two Government Caucus Committees. She also served as Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth. Katherine has served in Cabinet as Minister of State for Intermediate, Long Term and Home Care, a position which she held from 2001 to 2004.

Ms. Whittred studied at the University of Calgary where she obtained a Bachelor of Education degree. Before her election to the Legislative Assembly, she worked as a secondary school teacher, and also owned and operated a small manufacturing business with her husband. Katherine and Don Whittred live in North Vancouver. Their grown children and their grandchildren live nearby.

David Yan
League Assets Corp.

David Yan is the Vice President of Member Services for League Assets Corp., a real estate investment firm focused on assisting their investors with intergenerational wealth. Prior to this, David had spent over 20 years in the financial services industry, most recently as the Regional Vice-President for TD Waterhouse Private Client Services managing a team of Wealth professionals with specialized expertise in the areas of private banking, investment management, insurance and estate planning.

David was born and raised in Vancouver and is a graduate of UBC with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. As Chair of the TD Bank Dunk Tank Event for the past six years, he has helped raise close to $500,000 for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. David resides in Richmond with his wife Clara and their two children, Jacqueline and Tyler.
