

Recreation Therapist at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice
Casual Position – Starting week of October 27, 2008
There is a unique opportunity to work as a casual Recreation Therapist at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice - the first freestanding children’s hospice in North America. You will join a talented and committed interdisciplinary team of staff caring for children living with progressive life-limiting diseases and their families. This is an opportunity to apply and further develop your skills in pediatric palliative care.
Reporting to the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator you are responsible for assisting in the planning, development and implementation of a variety of recreation therapy programs and practice standards which reflect the hospice philosophy and objectives and support the children, their families and your coworkers. You will be a collaborative participating member of the larger interdisciplinary team.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree or Diploma in Recreation Therapy or related field, supplemented with a minimum of one year of related experience in administering recreation therapy programs for children and / or people with disabilities or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must be eligible to sit for the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification exam. Knowledge and experience in working with children with life threatening illnesses or palliative care an asset. Class IV unrestricted drivers license is required.
The position requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective communication with children, families, staff members and representatives of community agencies. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within the team and support the knowledge and skills development of staff in the areas of recreation therapy.
This is a casual position of about 15 hours every two weeks with some regularly scheduled hours and some opportunity for additional hours. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
