The goal is to increase awareness of the many issues that are involved when a child is diagnosed with a progressive, life-limiting illness. The philosophy of palliative care will be outlined and the many issues related to the complex care of the child and family will be presented.
The workshop is designed for nurses, physicians, educators, social workers and other health care professionals involved in providing Paediatric palliative care.

Workshop Objectives:
- To increase awareness and understanding of the multiple issues related to caring for a dying child and his/her family.
- To increase competencies in managing symptoms throughout the illness and at the end of life.
- To understand concepts related to emotional, spiritual and psychosocial issues for the dying child, siblings, parents and other care providers.
- To enhance understanding of the interdisciplinary team within and across health care settings.

- Paediatric Palliative Care: An overview
- Complex symptom management in a child with a neurodegenerative condition
- Supporting the family system through understanding the child’s perspective
- Making Moments Count - Grief and loss support through the illness and beyond
- Pain assessment and medical management for a child with cancer
- Professional Caregivers: How do we stay healthy?
Special Guest Speaker at the dinner on Thursday night: “From a Parent’s Perspective”
Workshop Registration / Fee:
- $135 if registered by February 9th
- $155 if registered after February 9th, 2012.
- Fee includes registration, handout materials, lunch and buffet dinner on Thursday, continental breakfast on Friday and refreshment breaks on both days.
- Registration is limited to 100 participants.
- A limited number of student registrations are available for $75. Student registrations do not include evening dinner / speaker.

Workshop will be held at the South Thompson Guest Inn 3438 Shuswap Road, Kamloops, BC - www.stigr.com
- 48 guest rooms are available at the special rate of $99 + tax so please contact the Inn directly at 250-573-3777 to book your room early!
- At time of booking please advise the South Thompson Inn of any dietary requirements/allergies.
The Inn has graciously offered to honour the $99/night for the weekend if you wish to stay longer to start your spring break or enjoy skiing at Sun Peaks.
Transportation from the Airport:
The Airporter offers door-to-door shuttle service to and from the airport. They are at the airport to meet all arriving flights and serve all hotels in the region. They operate both 6 and 11-passenger vans and are able to provide special group rates. They accept Visa and Master Card. Contact them at (250) 314-4803.
If you are arriving with a group it is best to call before you leave and arrange a group transport.
