During the Lighting of the House festivities, CEO Filomena Nalewajek, spoke about the milestones reached in 2010 – the charity celebrating 15 years helping BC children and their families to embrace life; 100 years since the historic manor (home of Canuck Place) was built; and the start of construction of a new hospice in Abbotsford.
On hand for the ceremonial lighting were representatives of past families cared for by the hospice - the Van Zanten family – who were the third family to come to Canuck Place after it opened in 1995.
BC’s Minister of Finance and local MLA Colin Hansen assisted in the lighting and announced the Provincial Government’s support of Canuck Place by granting $1.5 million towards the capital campaign to build the second hospice on Abbotsford. [read related story]
The over 70,000 LED power smart lights were assembled by hard working members of the Canuck Place volunteer garden crew and with assistance of corporate volunteers / employee teams from: the Vancouver Canucks, BC Hydro, Accenture, UPS, RBC, Purdy's and Smythe Ratcliffe.
Providing entertainment to the festive occasion were members of the Bach Choir and the musical group Classical Nouveaux. Dancers from Goh Ballet dressed in costumes from the Nutcracker mingled with the crowd while warm refreshments were provided by Starbucks, Sheridee Lee Catering and Canadian Maple Delights.
Thank you all our families, suppliers, donors, volunteers and guests who made the event such a special evening.
The holiday light display at Canuck Place, 1690 Matthews Avenue, Vancouver, will be on until January 2nd. The public is welcome to view the lights from the street – please be respectful of our neighbours.
