After 23 days of caring and nurturing, the children of Canuck Place released the butterflies they had raised from caterpillars. Following the butterflies’ lifecycle, the children witnessed the grubs’ progression to the pupal stage prior to their spectacular metamorphosis and emergence as colourful winged butterflies. The Canuck Place School Program raises the butterflies as part of an enrichment activity that all children can be involved in. It also serves as a sub-component for the subject of science. As School Teacher, Joanne Ashdown states, “Raising the butterflies is a great metaphor for change and growth for the children involved.” Butterflies are also raised and released as part of the Bereavement and Support Program at Canuck Place.
