Canuck Place Mourns the Passing of Dr. Donald Rix

Dr. Rix served as Chair of the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Board from September 2006 to June 2009 and subsequently remained on the Board as Past Chair.

“As our Board Chair, Dr. Rix brought his philanthropic spirit and entrepreneurial drive to our organization,” said Filomena Nalewajek, Chief Executive Officer of Canuck Place.  “That same determination that led him to great success in the business world was evident in his work with us.”

“Dr. Rix had a vision that every child in BC with a life-threatening illness and their family should have access to Canuck Place and he made this his top priority while he served as Chair,” reflected John Rose, current Chair of the Canuck Place Board.  “I am pleased to say we are well on the way to make that happen.”

To meet the growing need, Canuck Place is planning to build a second children’s hospice in Abbotsford.  When complete, this new facility would essentially double its current capacity.

“Dr. Rix encouraged us to be bold.  He felt strongly that no child or family should be left behind and instilled a confidence in all of us that we can ultimately realize that dream,” remembered Nalewajek.  “Today we are lighting a candle in his honour to celebrate his memory and remind us of the impact he had on our children and families.  He will be sorely missed as a visionary, as a mentor and as a wonderful, caring friend.”
