2009 Lighting of the House
On November 30th, 14 years to the day that Canuck Place first opened its doors to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, over 250 families, friends, volunteers, supporters, and partners were on hand to take part to celebrate the 2009 Lighting of the House. The annual event showcases the festive holiday light display decorating the house and surrounding gardens for the first time this season.
BC’s Minister of Health - Kevin Falcon, Minister of Finance - Colin Hansen and Chair of the Canucks for Kids Fund Board Paolo Aquilini and his family joined Canuck Place CEO Filomena Nalewajek to officially 'flip the switch' and turn on the 60,000+ LED lights. View Photos
Preparations for the lights began a number of weeks ago led by our Volunteer Garden Crew and helped out by corporate teams of employees from the Vancouver Canucks, TELUS, RBC, UPS, BMO, Accenture and BC Hydro.
A special thanks to the school children at York House who raised the money to make this year's lighting festival possible.
Attendees sported Olympic toques courtesy of HBC while listening to a live concert by the Bach Choir and carolers - Kimberly Baskerville, Layla Vaugeois, and Rachael Chatoor. Tasty treats and warm refreshments were enjoyed by all courtesy of Starbucks, Canadian Maple Delights, TAC Mobility, and Meinhardt. As well, thanks to Bevo Farms, guests left the grounds with a beautiful pointsettia.
The public is welcome to view the lighting display on until January 2nd from the sidewalk and streets surrounding the Hospice. We ask that everyone remain courteous of our neighbours. Thank you.
