Canuck Place Announces New Additions to 2009-2010 Hospice Society Board of Directors

VANCOUVER – On September 24, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice elected three new members to its Hospice Society Board of Directors.

“The talents, compassion, drive to help others and enthusiasm demonstrated on our Board is exemplary,” says Filomena Nalewajek, Chief Executive Officer, Canuck Place. “Given the existing demand for our program, we have begun exploring building a second hospice in Abbotsford.  We are very fortunate to have such esteemed and committed individuals join our Board at this important juncture.”

Incoming director Gord Huston is the President & CEO of Envision Financial, one of Canada’s largest credit unions.  Additionally, Gord is a member of the Board of the BCIT Foundation and Abbotsford Community Foundation.
As well, John Newell Sr., co-owner of Windset Farms, one of Canada’s largest greenhouse facilities based in the Fraser Valley, has been appointed to the Hospice Board. John’s commitment to Canuck Place is multifaceted; he is giving of his time and also has fresh produce delivered to the Hospice’s kitchen on a weekly basis, straight from his family’s farm.

The Hospice also welcomed Laura Edwards to the Board.  As Executive Director Advancement for York House School, Laura has an extensive background in fundraising, business and volunteer work.  She holds a Certified Fund Raising Executive distinction and is very active in the community.

“Our Board is very diverse and collaborative,” says John Rose, Chair, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Society.  “Each member brings a unique skill set to the organization and wants to work in unison with their peers to find meaningful ways to help the BC children and families we serve.  We have a challenging year ahead of us and I am confident with the team we have in place that we will be successful in achieving our goal of reaching more children and families that need our care. ”
