Madison Clinic: Outpatient Pediatric Palliative Care Clinic

Madison Clinic is an outpatient clinic that is a shared program between BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) and Canuck Place Children's Hospice (CPCH)

The clinic operates as a bridge between the two institutions by providing additional palliative care services, in the form of an outpatient clinic, to children living with life-threatening illnesses.

Life-threatening illnesses are those conditions where survival until full adulthood is a serious challenge. These children often require management of advanced symptoms.

What does the Madison Clinic provide?

  • medical & nursing assessment/management of symptoms
  • information about symptoms, illness trajectories, and advanced directives
  • earlier connection to pediatric palliative care services without referral or commitment to Canuck Place program
  • parent education and emotional support
  • coordination and referral to hospital and community support

Who does the Clinic see?

Specifically, the clinic aims to see children living with progressive, life-threatening illnesses.
The only referral criterion is a family's willingness to access pain and symptom management expertise from a palliative care team.
Children do not have to be on the Canuck Place Program in order to benefit from the Madison Clinic.

Where is the Madison Clinic?

The Clinic operates at BCCH in the Ambulatory Care Building and is staffed by a CPCH physician & Nurse Clinician

When does the Clinic operate?

Please note: Madison Clinic does not replace the current processes for referrals directly to the Canuck Place program or for palliative care consultation.

For urgent referrals to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH) for symptom management, call Canuck Place directly at 604.731.4847 to speak with the Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse in Charge

For routine referrals to the CPCH program, call the Canuck Place Intake Coordinator   (see the Healthcare Professional - Referrals section for more information)
