Ellen Pekeles has been a board member of MEC since 2013, elected by the membership of MEC. The Board elected her to be Board Chair in 2016. MEC is a retail outdoor coop with $500M in sales, 2000 employees and 23 stores across Canada. MEC’s purpose is to inspire and enable active outdoor lifestyles, which Ellen has embraced all her life.
Ellen was the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Operations for Vancity Credit Union from 2006 until Jan 2017. Her role at Vancity included leadership for People Solutions, Facilities, and Environmental Management; and Information Technology (from 2012-2015). Vancity is Canada’s largest credit union with $24 billion in assets, 520,000 members, 2500 staff, and 59 branches. Ellen had three previous executive positions at Vancity since she joined in November 2006: VP Community Leadership, SVP Strategy and VP Human Resources.
Prior to Vancity, Ellen was a Chief Operating Officer in Vancouver Coastal Health from 2002-2006. In that role she was responsible for the full spectrum of health care in 11 municipalities and 14 First Nations communities leading 3500 staff. Ellen was Vice President Programs for the North Shore Health Region from 1999-2002 and Site Administrator for the Misericordia Hospital and executive team member for the Caritas Health Group in Edmonton from 1995-1998. Ellen was the Administrator for Child Health in Edmonton, including the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Capital Health, from 1998-1999.
Ellen holds a BSc in Physical Therapy from University of Toronto and an MHA from University of Ottawa and has been a member of eight non-profit, philanthropic, public sector and cooperative boards over the last fifteen years.
