Gillian represents the voices of patients and families on the Canuck Place Board of Directors and is a liaison person between the Family Advisory Council and the Board. Gillian’s son Sam passed away at Canuck Place in 2009 after a long hard battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer. In her roles on the Board, Family Advisory Council, and Quality Care Committee, Gillian aims to support patients and families walking the difficult road of caring for a child with a terminal illness.
A leader in the field of patient and family engagement, Gillian is currently involved with several research projects at BC Children’s and BC Women’s hospital working to bridge and facilitate connections between research teams and the lived experience of patients and families. Recently she completed course work at McMaster University in “Family Engagement in Research”. Her current work includes projects with:
- The National Training Entity for the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR)
- ChildKind International –Education and Clinical Experience Working Group and the Knowledge Translation Sub-Committee at Children and Women’s Hospital. Working towards ChildKind Certification.
- Child-Bright Network Training Committee
- Child-Sized KT Project-BC Support Unit-Advancing Patient Oriented Research
Gillian previously worked for over twenty years in information services at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Library before moving to the coast to be closer to her second son Paul and his wife Michelle. When not busy with patient and family engagement work, she is employed by the City of Vancouver with the Vancouver Public Library.
