Connecting Children with their Hereos
January 19, 2017
The Canucks for Kids Fund has supported Canuck Place Children’s Hospice for over twenty years. Not only do they contribute with grants that account for approximately 6% of the Canuck Place annual operating budget, they also provide children and families on program exclusive player visits and events. These visits allow families to create lasting memories together, connecting children with life-threatening illnesses to their heroes. The Letchers, from Victoria, are one such family who feel incredibly fortunate for this gift.
“Heston’s diagnosis has been described as a ‘parent’s worst nightmare’ and it is our reality.” said mom, Kerena. “We are the parents that are grieving the loss of our hopes and dreams for our child, all while anticipating a much greater grief to come with his passing. Until then we are creating all the memories we can.”
The family regularly packs up to stay at Canuck Place so son Heston can receive care.
“When we get the chance to meet Canuck players, we feel like we’ve won the lottery,” said Kerena. “It gives us something to be truly excited about, and an opportunity to feel important. You cannot underestimate the value of moments like this to look forward to or remember fondly for a family who is coping with the stresses of having a terminally ill child.”
Does it take away the burden of our child’s diagnosis? No, it doesn’t.
Does it help us have something to distract us from the heaviness of it? Absolutely.”
The Canucks for Kids Fund make these special memories possible. Whether it’s decorating pumpkins, hosting a family skate, or even Fin stopping by the hospice to say “Hi”, we’re so grateful for all the ways they bring smiles to the faces of Canuck Place families.
