At Canuck Place, storytelling is an extension of our care. Families who share their experience help others understand what pediatric palliative care means and why it matters. We hold 3-4 storytelling engagements each year, tied to an awareness or fundraising campaign. Your story helps build connections with donors who are inspired to give to help ensure every family receives care. Our Communications team approaches our work together thoughtfully. We work at your pace, follow your lead, and involve your clinicians in the process. Your readiness, comfort, and voice guides everything we do.

About this opportunity

We are currently seeking families who speak Mandarin or Cantonese and are interested in sharing their story in their preferred language. By sharing your experience, you can help other families from your community learn more about Canuck Place. Your story also helps donors understand the impact of pediatric palliative care for the children and families we support.

Your story will be shared through photos, videos, and written articles—across platforms such as canuckplace.org, social media, advertising, news, and other Canuck Place communications.

Who we’re looking for

We welcome families who prefer to communicate in:

  • Mandarin (普通话)
  • Cantonese (廣東話)

If language access or interpretation support would be helpful, please let us know. Often families choose a family member to be an interpreter; otherwise, we are committed to finding a format that feels comfortable and accessible to you.

Ways you can participate (video styles)

The primary part of our work together will be a photo/video shoot. We understand being on camera can feel different for everyone, so we offer several ways to participate:

  • Interview-style video: Share your story by speaking on camera. Example – The Cleugh Family
  • Voice-over storytelling: Your voice is recorded while photos or video clips play on screen. Example – The Lee Family
  • Candid moments (no talking required): Footage of everyday moments—playing, spending time together, receiving care—with no speaking and text added to support storytelling. Example – The Hernandez Family

Time commitment

Approximate time involved over a 2-3 month period:

  • Written interview questions (1-2hours) and sharing 10–15 family photos (1- 2 hours)
  • Photo/video shoot at the hospice (full day depending on concept/format)
  • Reviewing materials before they are shared (1–2 hours)
  • Feedback form to be filled out (1 hour)

You will need access to a computer and basic familiarity with Microsoft Teams or Zoom or a family member who can support virtual meetings.

Your choice and comfort matters

You can change your mind at any time. Simply reach out and know that your care at Canuck Place will not be affected in any way.
