Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Savours Life at the 10th Annual Gift of Time Gala

VANCOUVER, BC – September 28, 2014 – Over 600 guests gathered at Vancouver’s Westin Bayshore Hotel ballroom to support BC’s recognized pediatric palliative care provider, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
The 10th Annual Gift of Time Gala sponsored by TELUS was hosted September 27 raised over $1 million.
Gala chairs Zahra Mamdani, Lindsay Geheran and Cathy Trimble led a 15 plus committee bringing in a significant tally to support operating costs at Canuck Place.
Canuck Place Chief Executive Officer Margaret McNeil spoke to a hushed crowd and shared the highlights of the provincial care provided by the organization. The Shaunnessy and new second provincial location in Abbotsford care for over 560 kids with life-threatening illnesses and the families who love them. Newly-minted Board Chair John Nicola of Nicola Wealth Management paid tribute to departing chair John Rose of NuHeat.
Simon Cooksley Design inspired room had red Murano glass chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and all white lounges serving Moet while the guests danced until 1:00 am with Dr. Strangelove.
The event featured a story from parents Michael Treschow (Board of Governor UBC and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia Okanagan) and his wife Jill Treschow about their son Sam, who had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and received respite, pain and symptom management, counselling and end-of-life care from the clinical team at Canuck Place. Sam fought two life-threatening illnesses. In his teens he was also diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in Stage 4. In his last two weeks of life, Sam stayed at Canuck Place where he finished his high school diploma with bravery beyond his years.
