The Ariadne Labs affiliated with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health developed a systematic approach and guide to serious illness conversations. The guide serves as a framework for clinicians to improve the lives of adults with serious illness by increasing meaningful conversations about their values and priorities. Canuck Place adapted a pediatric version of this guide, the Serious Illness Conversation Guide-Pediatrics© which addresses unique issues for children with serious illnesses, explores caregiver goals and supports health care providers to align the care they provide with what is most important to the family.
SICG-Peds© is a tool to support health care providers in leading conversations to explore a family’s understanding of their child’s serious illness and their values, goals, priorities and preferences for care. Conducting serious illness conversations requires specialized knowledge and skills to ensure that topics are handled in a compassionate and effective manner. Learning about a families’ goals empowers health care providers to provide better care.
Master trainers from Canuck Place have partnered with pediatric palliative care colleagues and patient partners to train pediatric healthcare professionals to use the SICG-Pediatrics and teach approaches to speak with families about serious illness locally, nationally and internationally.
Exploring Goals and Priorities for Children with Serious Illness Workshop
Having conversations to explore a family’s values, goals of care, and priorities are essential elements of high-quality care for children with serious illnesses. Working with children with increasing complexity, it is important for health care professionals to develop communication skills in speaking to families about serious illness. Serious Illness Conversation Guide Pediatrics© (SICGPeds©) – Pediatrics training is a 2.5 hour facilitated interactive online workshop that will empower clinicians to have more therapeutic conversations with parents and family members of seriously ill children.

Pediatric Train the Trainer: Serious Illness Conversation Guide Workshop
The “Train the Trainer” for the Serious Illness Conversation Guide (SICG) – Pediatrics is a 3 hour workshop that includes content and practice in the role as a SICG facilitator. This training is available to healthcare professionals that have previously taken the SICG-Pediatrics training workshop and regularly use the SICG-Pediatrics guide in their clinical practice. Ideally, trainers will also have experience in teaching and mentoring others in communication strategies.
The objectives are as follows:
o Discuss the role of the facilitator and trainer
o Explore adults based learning strategies
o Review essential aspects of teaching the SIC guide
o Practice facilitation
o Review common questions that arise in regard to teaching the guide to various clinicians

Neonatal Care: Serious Illness Conversation Guide Training Workshop
This Serious Illness Conversation Guide (SICG) – Pediatrics training geared for healthcare professionals who practice in the Neonatal-Intensive Care Unit is a 2.5 hour facilitated interactive online workshop that will empower clinicians to have more therapeutic conversations with caregivers and family members of seriously ill infants.
