Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Lights Up for the Holiday Season
December 7, 2016
Canuck Place Children’s Hospice kicked off the holiday season with the lighting of over 60,000 festive lights decorating the hospice grounds with hundreds of donors, partners, friends and family members. The event, presented by CIBC, is a celebration of the community of caring supporters who contribute to the funding of pediatric palliative care for children and families across BC.
“The Lighting of the House is a special tradition at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice since we first opened our doors in 1995,” said Margaret McNeil, Canuck Place CEO. “These lights represent giving light and hope to over 670 children and families on the Canuck Place program, from all over British Columbia. Donors ensure pediatric palliative care for children with life-threatening illnesses made possible at Canuck Place.”
The evening featured a performance by the Vancouver EnChor Choir, festive activities, as well as a special ceremony where Canuck Place children Soskay and Anthony flipped the switch to illuminate the house and grounds. “We almost forgot about our family life. Everything was about taking care of Soskay and how to manage it,” said Akiho. “We started going to Canuck Place and discovered a new life for our family, we finally felt whole.” For Soskay’s mother Akiho, this memorable event reminds her of how Canuck Place has made an impact in their lives.
The 60,000 lights were installed over a period of one month with the help of Festilight, Canada’s premier decorative lighting specialist, and 45 employees of Canucks Sports & Entertainment.
Canuck Place has also launched their online Light A Life campaign at www.canuckplace.org to invite the public to join the donors at this event in contributing to Canuck Place care. This campaign complements the Lighting of the House event and will run until December 31st, 2016.
